Funeral services for Mr. Darwin Goodchild, 78 of Spencer, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Spencer. Rev. Michael Sharp will officiate the service.
Interment will take place in Silver Lake Cemetery in Ayrshire at 1 p.m. Tuesday following the lunch. A military flag presentation will be held following the services at the church.
Mr. Goodchild passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Spencer Hospital.
Darwin "Bud" Neil Goodchild, the son of Lester and Gladys (Grove) Goodchild, was born July 3, 1931, in Havelock, Iowa. He attended school in Havelock, Lake Center and Papillion, Neb. Bud served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 and was stationed in Germany.
On June 15, 1955, he married Ruth Mohr at Zion Lutheran Church in Ayrshire. They are the parents of one son, Dave. Bud and Ruth farmed near Gillett Grove and Webb. During this time, Bud also operated a commercial feed grinding business. Starting in 1974, he worked for the Clay County Road Department, until his retirement in 1992. Bud was a member of the Iowa-Minnesota Chuckwagon Association. As the owner of the Gold G. Wagon, Bud and his driver and outriders raced several times at the Clay County Fair and at numerous other events. Bud was a lifelong member of the Amvet of Havelock and the VFW of Spencer. He was also a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church for several years.
Bud loved his two grandsons and enjoyed spending time with them. After his retirement, he looked forward to playing pinochle with his friends at the VFW and volunteering to help others with a variety of projects. His other interests included hunting, fishing and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister; and her husband, Bill Scott; a nephew, Doug Goodchild; sisters-in-law: Ruth and Joyce Mohr; and a brother-in-law, Bob Bowman.
