John Kennedy immigrated from Ireland about 1865 to West coast of California. He met and in 1872 married Mary Casey. They moved to the mining town of Gold Hill, Storey County, Nevada before 1875 and for over 40 years made their home there raising four children; James, Joseph, Mary and Catherine.

In 1916, they moved with their son, Joseph and their grandsons, Raymond and Jack to East Ayers Avenue in Escalon, San Joaquin County, California. This was property that their widowed daughter (who worked in San Francisco), Catherine Alice Kennedy Setaro had purchased for the family to live on. Wood was still so scarce that they had dismantled their home in Gold Hill and used the wood to build their new farm home in the district known at that time as Dent.
