JOSEPH BECKER, 65, A FORDYCE CITIZEN, IS KILLED TUESDAY

Falls Off a Load of Wood -- Breaks His Neck -- Dies Almost Instantly
Funeral To Be Held Today
Born at St. Helena--Was Former Fordyce Implement Dealer

Joseph Becker, age 65, lifelong resident of the north part of Cedar county, and well known former Fordyce business man, was killed in a tragic accident which occurred near Fordyce about noon Tuesday, October 22.

When Mr. Becker accidentally fell off a load of wood, he sustained a broken neck, and died almost instantly. Tuesday morning Mr. Becker and S. C. Sorenson of Fordyce went out into the country with teams to bring in some wood for winter use. About noon they loaded their last wagon boxes of wood and were preparing to return to their homes in Fordyce for dinner. Both Mr. Becker and Mr. Sorenson had a team and wagon.

Just as they were about to leave the Frank Thoene farm place where they had loaded their wood, Mr. Becker accidentally fell of his loaded wagon. Mr. Sorenson, who was on another wagon, rushed to the side of Mr. Becker, who was able to utter a few words before he succumbed. Mr. Becker's words were inaudible and he died a few minutes after the fatal fall.

The tragic accident occurred near the Julius Tigges farm place. Mr. Sorenson rushed at once to notify Mr. Tigges and he in turn drove to Fordyce for the priest, Rev. Daniel Reifenrath, and to notify the family and relatives.

Joseph Becker was born May 24, 1870 at St. Helena, the son of Cedar county pioneers, Matt and Barbara Becker. He was baptized at St. Helena and grew to young manhood there.

On May 13, 1904, Joe Becker and Miss Jennie Burbach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Werner Burbach, sr., were united in marriage at Holy Trinity Catholic church in Hartington. To this happy couple were born five children: Reinold, Lucina, Victor, Cyril and Loretta.

For years the couple lived on a farm near Fordyce, later moving into Fordyce in 1918. Mr. Becker was engaged in the implement business in Fordyce for a number of years, having his shop in the building now occupied by the Weller Bros. lumber yards.

The late Mr. Becker was a fine type of Christian man, a devout member of the Catholic church, and a man interested in the civic life of the community.

Surviving him are his widow and five children: Reinold of Crofton, Miss Lucina of Yankton, Miss Loretta, Victor and Cyril, all of Fordyce. He also leaves seven brothers and sisters: Peter of Fordyce, Mike of Yankton, John of Fordyce, Henry of St. Helena, Mrs. Anna Felber of Hartington, Mrs. Henry Lammers of Fordyce and Mrs. Louis Hoesing of Yankton. A brother, Matt Becker, preceded him in death.

Funeral for the late Mr. Becker was held at St. John's Catholic church at Fordyce this morning when a requiem high mass was read by the pastor, Rev. Daniel Reifenrath, at nine o'clock. Interment was made in the Fordyce cemetery. Six nephews of the late Mr. Becker acted as pallbearers: Julius and Henry Becker, sons of Henry Becker, Herman and Adolph Becker, sons of John Becker, Julius Burbach and Roman Reinders.
