MATHIAS BECKER
The life story of Mr. Becker reads almost like a tale of the discovery of America. Crossing the Ocean on a sail boat, traveling all the way from Europe to Nebraska by water. In these days of rapid transportation and travel it is a far cry to the method Mr. Becker used in coming to America.
Mathias Becker came to Cedar County June 11, 1867 from Bremen, Germany. The family cross the Atlantic in a sail boat to New Orleans. From there a river steamer was taken to St. Louis where the Becker family changed boats and came up on the Missouri river to St. Helena.
In relating the story of his father, Peter Becker, now living in Fordyce says it took three months to cross the Ocean. There were many incidents on the journey that Mr. Becker recalls. One day Mr. Becker who was just a small boy at that time was playing on the ship. He fell down into the hold of the ship and was cut up quite badly, and still carries a scar on his face to remind him of his three month Ocean voyage.
