In Loving Memory of Mrs. J. M. Willard
On Saturday night, Feb. 10, 1923, at 11:40 the death angel visited the home of Mr. J. M. Willard and claimed for its victim the fond wife and affectionate mother, Mrs. Ida Lake Willard.
Mrs. Willard was the daughter of John and Sallie Lake, and was born at Ward Prairie, Nov. 15, 1869, being 53 years, two months and twenty-five days old. She was married to J. M. Willard on Jan. 5, 1887. To them were born thirteen children, ten of whom are living. Those living are Jim Willard, of Houston, Mrs. Augusta Sammons, of San Antonio; Fletcher; Earnest, of De Quincy, La.; Tim; Jerry, of Streetman; Lillard, Irene, Chester, Earl, and Woodrow. Those dead are Mattie, Sallie, and Harry. Mrs. Willard has one sister, Mrs. Irene Allen, living in Louisiana, and two half sisters, Mrs. Della Odom, of San Antonio, and Mrs. Alice Keaton, of Teague; one brother, Ed Lake of Ward Prairie.
Mr. and Mrs. Willard moved to Fairfield from Ward Prairie in January, 1901. She was a member of the Fairfield Baptist Church and she lived a consecrated Christian life, ever ready to do anything within her power to benefit her family and her Christ, whom she trusted for life and salvation. No sacrifice was too great for her to make, nor no deed of kindness too small for her. The family will miss her devotion, her love and tender care. Each of them and numerous kindred connections and friends will treasure in memory her splendid qualities of mind and heart, her thoughtful service and faithful performance of every duty. At the time of Mrs. Willard's death the weather was unusually bad and the streets were almost impassable but many were the sorrowing friends who came bearing beautiful floral offerings to pay tribute to this good woman. On Monday evening a beautiful service was held at the residence by Rev. H. L. McKissack, after which she was laid to rest in the Lake Chapel Cemetery at 4 o'clock in the presence of a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends.
