Samuel Lyle Profile

Samuel Lyle, oldest son of Robert and Sarah Rea Lyle, was born in Northampton County, Penna., on April 2, 1783, and thus was only about one year when his parents brought him to Washington County in June 1784. He lived with his parents on their farm until his marriage to Mary Mason which took place in 1806 or 1807. This couple were members of the Cross Creek Presbyterian Church. Samuel Lyle was a school teacher and taught in several of the subscription schools of the area during his short life. He died at West Middleton in April 1813, when he was just thirty years of age.

The records of the Cross Creek Church reveal the fact that four children of Samuel and Mary mason Lyle were baptized there on August 1, 1813. This was after Samuel Lyle's death, the children being presented for baptism by the widowed mother. The names of these children as given in the records are: Patty, Sarah Ann, Mary and Samuel. From this it would appear that Patty died young, since subsequent history of the family says nothing about her.
