Thursday, April 12, 2007

Dr. Byron Youra Fleck, 91, formerly of West Chester, died Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at Hickory House Nursing Home, Honey Brook.
He was the husband of the late Phyllis M. Fleck, with whom he shared 62 loving years.
Born and raised in York, he was the son of the late Byron R. and Marie Fleck.
Dr. Fleck began what would be a lifetime career in education with a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1942.
Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with distinction as a commissioned officer for the duration of World War II. While stationed in Cheltehem, England, he met his wife at a U.S.A. Officers' Club and brought her to the United States as a war bride in 1946.
After the war, he and his wife returned to the University of Iowa and on the G.I. bill he completed a master's and Ph.D. program in history with Pi Gamma Mu honors in 1950.
He began his teaching career at Glenville State Teachers College in West Virginia. His tenure at West Chester University began as a history professor in 1953. During his career at West Chester, he participated as an instructor and administrator during the transition from a state teachers college to a multicurricular state university. He directed the growth of a small history department into the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, of which he became dean in 1965. Upon his retirement in 1977 he was named dean emeritus, a distinction of which he was extremely proud.
An avid stamp collector from childhood, Dr. Fleck also enjoyed traveling, camping, music, reading and following his beloved Phillies.
He always enjoyed his time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Philip B. Fleck, husband of Judy of Oley and Daryl R. Fleck, husband of Barbara of Glenmoore; and a daughter, Anne M. Kaczorowski, wife of Jim of Charlottesville, Va. She had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Hamme, and brother, Albert Don Fleck.
A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 17, at the Founds Funeral Home Inc., with interment in Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Byron's memory to the West Chester University Foundation, University Scholarship Fund, Filano Hall, West Chester, PA 19383; or to the Hickory House Residents Activities Fund, Hickory House Nursing Home, 3120 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, PA 19344.
