Sarah Jane Venters Baxley, wife of William James Baxley of Hemingway SC, and mother of both William Allen and John Christopher Baxley. Her husband died of malaria in Richmond, VA during the Civil War and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. The widow and most of her family moved to Hawthorne, FL area after her husband died and she founded our Baxley group in Florida. As a widow she was given papers for a land grant near Palatka, FL, but after partial packing to move from SC there was a house fire that destroyed those papers after she thought they were safe in other storage. The family arrived in Palatka and could not produce the detailed papers for the grant. Instead they were given a different land grant near Hawthorne and near an area called Melrose I think. (Info from Lola Baxley Rowell, daughter of John Christopher given on a tape recording in 1976.)

(Researchers: -- be careful not to confuse this Sarah Jane Venters born in 1832 in North Carolina and who lived in Hemingway SC ......with another Sarah Venters who was born 1831 in Georgetown SC, lived in Georgetown (seen in the 1850 Census in Georgetown) and was married to a Daniel Baxley. Both these women had a son named William A. Baxley but the names of other children are different and that will help you differentiate. Both were married to Baxley men who died during the Civil War. I have seen family trees online and in Ancestry that shows the two Sarah Venters as having the same parents' names to add to the extent of the errors. Be careful what you find on Ancestry's site before you accept it as fact.)
