From the History of Allen County, Indiana:

"JACKSON VALENTINE, Eel River Township, son of John and Susannah Valentine, was born October 15, 1824, in Franklin County, Ohio. He was early trained to habits of industry, and he learned his lesson well. His opportunities for acquiring ail education when young were limited to the country schools, which at that time had not attained their present standard of excellence, and his education was consequently rudimentary only. His father was a farmer, owning the farm on which he lived, and which he sold in 1833, and in June of that year took his family and removed to Allen County. Soon after his arrival, he purchased the tract of land which his son Jackson now owns, consisting of 227 acres of excellent land in Eel River Township, and commenced to clear it of its heavy growth of timber, in order to make a comfortable home. Jackson remained at home, assisting his father in his labors on the farm, until January 6, 1850, when he was united in marriage with Miss Charlotte Greenawalt, of this county. Their union was blessed with three children, only one of whom (a son) is still living. She departed this life May 18, 1876, deeply mourned by all who knew her. Soon after their marriage, he purchased a tract of land, consisting of 124 acres, in Lake Township, on which, he lived until the latter part of 1859, at which time he purchased the old homestead of his father, and moved on to it, and where he now lives. It is it splendid farm---160 acres of the land is in a fine state of cultivation, and is very productive. On May 19, 1878, he was married the second time, taking Mrs. Maria Jones, an estimable widow lady, for his partner through the journey of life. Mr. Valentine has been a member of the Christian, or Campbellite Church, for nearly twenty years. He is a plain, industrious, upright man, and a good citizen.

From Valley of the Upper Maumee River, with historical account of Allen County and the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana:

"Jackson Valentine, of Eel River Township, is a son of John Valentine, one of the pioneers of the township. John Valentine, a native of Ohio, was married in 1820, to Susannah Peters, who was born in Maryland, January 4, 1799. Her parents were among the pioneers of Fairfield County, Ohio. John Valentine and wife, with little possessions, but with stout hearts, came with their wagon load of household goods into the wilds of Indiana in 1834, and settled in Eel River Township, June 11, entering 120 acres of wild land. This pioneer enterprise prospered, and they became the owners of 227 acres of good land. In 1856, John Valentine went west and settled in Iowa, where he bought some land, and property' in Knoxville, intending to reside there, but becoming dis-satisfied in 1859, he returned to Indiana and made his home with his son Jackson, where he remained until his death, which occurred in 1869. He was a member of the Christian church, and one of the leading citizens and representative farmers. Jackson Valentine was born in Franklin County, Ohio, October 15, 1824. He received a good common school education and remained at home with his parents. On January 6, 1850, he was united in marriage with Charlotte Greenewalt, by whom he had three children, one of whom is living, John W. She was born May 29, 1830, was a faithful member of the Christian church, and departed this life May 6, 1876. In 1878 he was married to Mrs. Maria Jones, daughter of Peter and Sarah B. Frysinger. She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He is a member of the Christian church. In 1868 he was a candidate for trustee on the republican ticket against John M. Taylor and reduced the adverse majority about half. Again in 1880, running against C. L. Greenwell, he reduced the majority to six. His desirable farm of 200 acres is admirably maintained and his handsome buildings are a testimonial to his enterprise."
