OBITUARIES - Sterling L. Brown - Waynesboro

Sterling L. "Bud" Brown, 76, of 8351 Lyons Road, died at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2000, in Waynesboro Hospital. In failing health for two years, he was critically ill for a month

Born August 6, 1923, in Washington Township, near Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Anges G. Brown and Ruth E. Kipe Brown.

He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, and its Crider's Men's Bible Class. He sang with the former Crider's Men's Chorus.

Following graduation in 1941 from Waynesboro High School, he worked at Fairchild Industries, Hagerstown, Md. He then did an engineering apprenticeship at Landis Tool Company, Waynesboro. After being discharged from the military, he returned to Landis' engineering department, retiring in 1987 with 45 years of service. During retirement, the company called him back, and he was an engineering consultant for four years.

He and his wife, M. Isabelle Miller Brown, were married on April 18, 1949, in Maryland. They moved to the present residence in 1991, after living for many years on Sunset Avenue, Waynesboro.

The couple taught Youth for Child Evangelism at the Good News Camp on Country Club Road, Waynesboro, and release time classes for Child Evangelism at a Presbyterian church in Path Valley. They were youth advisors at the former Evangelical United Brethren Church, now Faith United Methodist, and assisted youth at Camp Penn church camp, off of Old Forge Road, Waynesboro.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army artillery in the European Theater of Operations.

Mr. Brown was a member of South Chapter of 2977 of the American Association of Retired Persons and AARP's National division. For a number of years, he helped deliver meals for the Waynesboro Senior Activity Center. He enjoyed playing golf.

Besides his wife, surviving are two daughters, Beverly L. Tanner of Elizabethtown and Kimberly S. Hovis of Waynesboro; three sons, Jeffrey of Middletown, Dr. Michael J. of Waynesboro and Timothy D. of Bel Air, Maryland; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte Hess of Waynesboro; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter in 1992, two sisters and a brother.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Faith United Methodist Church, 104 North Potomac Street, Waynesboro. The Revs. Lynn D. Trutt and John L. Rauch will officiate. Burial will be private, following the service in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

Friends may call one hour before the service in the church. There will be no public viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to Child Evangelism fellowship of Franklin County, 45 South Broad Street, Waynesboro.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.
