Mrs. Charlotte M. (Brown) Hess, 83, a resident of Providence Place, Chambersburg, and formerly of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, died at 8:15 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2005, in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born January 3, 1922, in Lantz, Md., she was the daughter of the late Angus G. and Ruth E. (Kipe) Brown. She lived mostly in the Waynesboro area.

Mrs. Hess graduated from Waynesboro Area Senior High School in 1968.

She married Samuel Austin Hess February 14, 1996, in Waynesboro.

During World War II she worked at Landis Tool Company, then Landis Machine Company, both of Waynesboro. She later worked at the Waynesboro Knitting Mill, Mont Alto Shoe Factory and prior to retiring in 1985 she worked in the shipping department at Landis Teledyne.

She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, Waynesboro Senior Center, Order of the Eastern Star Mount Vernon Chapter 316, Waynesboro, Joe Stickell American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 15, Waynesboro and the national AARP.

She is survived by one daughter, Andrea Lisa Gilbert, Chambersburg; four sons, Dallas G. Mowdy, Wilbur S. Mowdy, and Robert L. Stouffer all of Waynesboro, and Terry L. Stouffer, Spring City, Pa.; three stepdaughters, Roberta Yingling, Judy Sease both of Waynesboro, and Grace Hollinger, Chambersburg; two stepsons, Ivan E. Stouffer, York, Pa., and Eric L. Stouffer, Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 16 stepgrandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by twin children, Joseph and Joann Mowdy; daughter, Estella R. Mowdy; sisters, Evelyn West and Frances R. Stitely; and two brothers, Wilbur G. Brown and Sterling L. Brown.
