Joseph "Joe" Johns, 82, died Monday, January 11, 2010 following a lengthy illness. Mr. Johns was born in St. George, Georgia the son of the late Riley C. and Rosa Johns and lived in Jacksonville for many years. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army WWII and retired with 35 years service as a Maintenance Supervisor with Swisher International. He enjoyed traveling, camping, NASCAR and was a neighborhood handyman. Mr. Johns was preceded in death by his sisters: Ethel Nix, Edna Hodges, Ruth Thomas and Darthey Benton and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Emily Elliott Johns; 3 daughters: Ramona Johns (Rick) Purvis, Diane Johns-Carter and Sandra Johns (Eugene Jezek); 1 grandson: C. Ryan Purvis; 1 great granddaughter: Malena Purvis; 1 brother: Fred (Lillian) Johns and a host of nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00pm on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Peeples Family Funeral Homes, North Jacksonville Chapel, 2220 Soutel Drive near Lem Turner Road. His family will receive friends from 11:00am to 12:00pm prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday. Burial with Military Honors will follow at 1:30pm at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
