Born in Fairhaven, a son of the late Manuel & Maria Emilia (Eleuterio) Raposa, he resided most of his life in Tiverton, RI.
Mr. Raposa worked as a boiler maker for the International Brotherhood of Boiler Makers, Blacksmiths and Iron Ship Builders, Local #29 for many years, retiring in 1975.
He was a former member of the Rod & Gun Club in Tiverton. He was very active in the Tiverton Men's Softball League.
Besides his wife of 74 years, he is survived by two daughters, Delores Arruda of Tiverton, RI, and Eileen Leggett of Midland, TX, 5 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He is the brother of the late Angelina "Lena" (Raposa) Mederios-Penxicho, Edna Simmons-Cloy, Delinda Silvia, Cecilia Pontes, Manuel Raposa and Joseph Raposa.
His funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. from the OLIVEIRA FUNERAL HOME 2064 South Main St. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, Tiverton. Interment in Pocasset Hill Cemetery. Calling hours Friday 5 – 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory can be made to Tribute Program St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
A baseball field in Tiverton, RI was named in honor of John Raposa. Today as the funeral procession passed by this field, there standing, yound and old, baseball caps hanging from car attennas, caps held across chests, lights flashing, horns blowing and people waving, all to honor a man that was part of their lives. This touching tribute a true testiment to a great man.
