Mother Bertha Achterman, RSCJ, was born in St Louis, MO, 31 MAY 1858, to Joseph Achterman and Theresa Bierman (both natives of Germany). Bertha Achterman entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in St Louis, MO, and taught languages at the Academy of the Sacred Heart (known as the "City House"), at Taylor and Maryland Avenues, St Louis. Mother Achterman died of pernicious anemia at the age of 65 on 17 JAN 1926. She is buried in Section 11, Lot 1404, of Calvary Catholic Cemetery -- one of two sections reserved for Religious of the Sacred Heart -- Section 33, and Section 11.
