Son of C R Edwards and Mable Landrum Edwards. He grew up in Morgan County, graduating from Madison High School. He attended North Georgia College for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army. In 1946, he was assigned to the 8th Army Headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. He earned BS and MA degrees from the University of Georgia and a PhD from Georgia State University. He was a teacher, coach, and principal, teaching in Walton, Crawford, and DeKalb Counties. He later joined the State Department of Education as Deputy State School Superintendent, State Director of Vocational Education, and Commissioner of the Department of Human Resources. Beginning in 1985, he served 13 years as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Employees Retirement System for the State of Georgia. He served for more than eleven years as pastor of Friendship West Baptist Church in Washington County. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nell Shepard Edwards; granddaughter, Jill Stewart; sisters, Lucy Edwards and Margaret Fitzpatrick; and brothers Don Edwards, Hoy Edwards, and Howard Edwards. Survivors include his wife, Haywood Deane Edwards of Milledgeville; son, Nathan Edwards of Austin, TX; daughter, Susan Stewart (Randy) of Milledgeville; stepdaughters and their families, Louise Hall Layson, Linda Hall Hortman both of Milledgeville, Mary Virginia Stanley, and Martha Hall Josey (Ken) - both of Warner Robins; brother, Dean Edwards (Betty) of Madison; and brother-in-law, Ed Fitzpatrick of Madison.
