Myrtle Lois Sykes, eldest of nine children of George A. and Lula M. (Wortman) Sykes was born on April 19, 1910 on a farm between Oak and Ruskin, Nebraska. She passed away on February 20, 2003 at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, Nebraska at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 1 day.

Myrtle attended country grade school at Summit District 41 north of Ruskin. She graduated from Ruskin High School in 1928. After graduation she worked in various capacities for others in their home. In the thirties she went to work in Hebron as a cook for Lincoln Ave Cafè. Then she moved and was employed in Lincoln, Nebraska, until retirement. Later moving to Parkview Haven Nursing Home, Deshler. She was baptized and was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lincoln.

On July 19, 1960 she married John A. Bergman of Lincoln in Texarkana, Arkansas.

Myrtle loved to shop for antiques and collectibles, and she enjoyed embroider and cooking.

She lived in the communities of Ruskin, Hebron, Lincoln and Deshler.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John on October, 1996, one brother Harry and a step-daughter, Dorothy, and a sister-in-law Myrna Sykes.

She leaves to mourn 4 sisters Ruth Hansen and husband Enos of Deshler, NE Della Schiermeyer and husband Harvey of St. Joseph, MO; Fern Fisher and husband Bill of Davenport, NE and Alice Obar of Phoenix, AZ, and 3 brothers, Rex of Aurora, NE, Art and wife Rayoma of Davenport, NE and Archie and wife Lauretta of Longmont, CO; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 24, 2003 at 1:00 PM from the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, NE with Pastor Evelyn Phillips officiating. Music was "How Great Thou Art" and "Precious Lord Take My Hand" sung by Robert Sykes and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Amazing Grace" as congregational singing, with Dorcus Judy as organist.

Pallbearers were Leon Schiermeyer, Gary Hansen, Keith Fisher, Phil Sykes, David Fisher and Steve Sykes.

Interment was in the Spring Creek Cemetery at Ruskin, NE.
Memorials can be given to Bethany Lutheran Church or Parkview Haven Nursing Home.

Mergue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, NE was in charge of the arrangements.
