James A. Bunkers was born on January 21, 1920 east of Dell Rapids, the son of John and Susan Bunkers. He grew up east of Dell Rapids and attended St. Mary School through the eighth grade. He then farmed with his dad. They moved to a farm near Garretson in 1940. James married Lorraine Schreurs on January 22, 1947 in Garretson. They made their home on a farm near Harrisburg. They moved to a farm near Hartford in 1949 and in 1957, moved to farm near Dell Rapids. In 1968 he bought his farm east of Dell Rapids. His wife died in 1980. He retired in 1982. He remained on his farm until the time of his death. James died on Saturday, August 21, 1999 at his home. He was 79 and was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Barbara, and his six brothers and five sisters. He was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He loved fishing and hunting and was very devoted to his family. Grateful for having shared his life are his two sons, Mark and his wife, Kristi of Sioux Falls, and Matt and his wife, Heather of Rapids City; his five daughter, Mrs. Denny (Kathleen) Hansen of Dell Rapids, Lynn Murphy of Baltic, Mrs. John (Mary) Weiland of Dell Rapids, Mrs. Kevin (Renee) Brown of Dell Rapids, and Mrs. Lee (Brenda) Crabtree of LeMars, Iowa; his eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; and his sister, Mrs. Rita Vandersnick of Carthage.
