"1. The records of this office show that John Nelson, Jr., private, Co. C, 13th N.Y. Vol. Heavy Artillery, enlisted August 25, 1863 at Salamanca and that he was mustered out August 23, 1865." [As a private]
The "Organization Index to Pension Files of Veterans Who Served Between 1861 and 1900," Fold3.com; NARA microfilm publication T289 shows that "John Nelson Company C, 13th Regt Heavy Artillery, who enlisted from NY, applied for a pension Feb 07 1888.
