Cadet at the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, July 1, 1848, to July 1, 1852. After graduation, he was promoted in the Army as follows:
- Bvt. Second Lieut., 3d Artillery, on July 1, 1853
- Second Lieut., 3d Artillery, on Aug. 22, 1853
- First Lieut., 9th Infantry, on Mar. 3, 1855
- Captain, 9th Infantry, on Mar. 1, 1861
- Major, 18th Infantry, on Dec. 29, 1863
- Lieut. Colonel, 16th Infantry, on Aug. 16, 1871
- Colonel, 9th Infantry, on Feb. 20, 1882
He retired from active service on Apr. 2, 1883, for disability contracted in the line of duty.
