John "Stumpy" Henry was born in 1787 in what was then New Hanover County, North Carolina. His father was William "Tailor Billy" Henry (1760-1833) and his mother was Jeanette (Jane) Wiley (1767-1810).

He married Flora Henry (no kin)around 1814 in New Hanover County, North Carolina. Flora was born in 1790 in New Hanover County, North Carolina. Her father was Neil Cornelius Henry (1746-1811) and her mother is not known.

John and Flora had eight children before her death in 1844 in New Hanover County, North Carolina. John married his second wife, Martha Frances Simmons in 1847 and they had one daughter. John moved to Arkansas with second wife and child and his son, James Harvey, and his family in 1858. He died shortly thereafter in 1859 and is thought to be buried in an unmarked grave in the Glenville Cemetery in Nevada County, Arkansas.
