James was born in 1823 in what was then New Hanover County, North Carolina. He brought his family to Columbia County, Arkansas (now Nevada County)around 1858. Those accompanying him to Arkansas were his wife, Mary Susan Garris Henry, his six oldest children, his father, John "Stumpy" Henry, stepmother, Martha Frances Simmons Henry and half sister, Susan Victoria Henry. His father died not long after the journey in 1859 while his first wife died in 1868. They are both thought to be buried in unmarked graves alongside James in the Glenville Cemetery.

James' mother was Flora Henry of another Henry family in eastern North Carolina unrelated to his father's Henry clan. Flora was born around 1790 and died in 1844 in New Hanover County, (now Pender County)North Carolina.

John had nine children with Susan before her death. He then married Ann Formby (1840-1881) in 1870 and they had four children. He married his third wife, Mary Ann Lancaster (1854-1936) in 1883 and they had six children. Many of the Henrys of Southwest Arkansas are decended from James Harvey Henry.

James Harvey's grandfather was William "Tailor Billy" Henry who was born in 1760 in Scotland. He came to America in the early 1780s and settled around Rocky Point in the Black River District of North Carolina northwest of Wilmington where he raised his family and died in 1833. His wife was Jennette (Jane) Wiley (1767-1810) of Long Island, New York. It is thought that William met and married Jennette in New York after arriving in America before moving down to North Carolina where he had received a land grant.
