FERDINAND ZASTROW

KIEL OFFICIAL DIES
The festivities of the German War Veterans at Kiel were marred on Sunday afternoon last by the sudden death of Ferdinand Zastrow, president of the village and prominent citizen of the town. Members of the Krueger Verein from Kiel, Sheboygan. Manitowoc and Plymouth met for their annual picnic at Meyer's Park in the village and all were in the best of spirits until this sad and unfortunate death occurred. Addresses had been made by Max Hottellot of Milwaukee and Gustave Guenther of Chilton which were followed by Mr. Zastrow, who in the best of spirits, welcomed the visitors to the town. He seemed in the best of health and made a splendid impression on his hearers.
When he completed his speech he stepped from the platform and mingled with the large crowed for a short time and then joined the singing society of which he was a member. They sang one song and as they began another Mr. Zastrow faltered, dropped his book from his hand and then fell dead. Physicians were summoned at once, but he was past all medical aid.
A peculiar coincidence is that the deceased wife of Mr. Zastrow met her death exactly under similar circumstances in 1901. It was the occasion of a big saengerfest at Kiel and she was stricken with heart failure while working in the kitchen and dropped over dead.
There are no other known relatives. For the past three years Mr. Zastrow has been president of the village. Prior to that time he was chairman of the town of Schleswig and of the village of Kiel, representing these two until in the county board of supervisors for several years. In politics he was a democrat.
The deceased was a member of the Kiel lodge of Oddfellows who had charge of the funeral which took place Wednesday afternoon.

FERDINAND ZASTROW 1910

On Sunday afternoon, Mr. Ferdinand Zastrow, our village president who is beloved and respected by all, was at the Krieger festival where he was singing with the men's choir. During the song he died suddenly due to a brain stroke.
The deceased who is also well known outside of our county had reached the age of 63 years, 2 months and 19 days. He was born in Germany and came to America as a young man. In 1861 he married Miss Ackermann at Niagara, New York and later they came to Town Schleswig where he owned a farm for many years. After he sold the farm he moved to Ada where he lived for several years. About 11 years ago he moved to Kiel. The marriage was childless and his wife died on June 23, 1901 in a similar way at her home from a stroke while he was at the song festival.
Mr. Zastrow held several official posts in town Schleswig, chairman, assessor, and during his time in Kiel as village trustee and supervisor. At the time of his death, he was in the third term as village president. He was a long time member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Men's Choir and was the treasurer of both organizations.
The deceased is survived by only one brother, who lives in Michigan, also an adopted daughter, Mrs. Louis Ohlemotz of Sheboygan. Beyond that untold friends who mourn his sudden death.
The burial took place on Wednesday afternoon from the deceased home, under the direction of the Odd Fellows Lodge. The Arion Band lead the procession to the Kiel Cemetery with the village members of the Men's Choir, the Krieger Association and the fire department, where he was laid to rest beside his wife.
