ANNA KARLE, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died in Fresno after a short illness, an irreplaceable loss in the lives of family members and many friends.

Born Anna Schneider, her journey began in Stahl, Russia. Her parents, Heinrich and Anna (Kleinfelder) Schneider were members of the 200-year-old Russian-German community of farmers that lived along the Volga River. They fled Russia and the Revolution in the winter of 1921, to Minsk, Poland, then Frankfurt/Oder in Germany. Two younger siblings, a brother and a sister, did not survive the journey from Russia. In 1922 when Anna was seven years old, the family departed Germany for the United States through Ellis Island, New York, and on to Fresno.

Fresno had become the home of a substantial and active community of similar Volga Germans and supportive family members. The family first lived in Biola and then on B and C Streets in Fresno, where Anna's sisters and brothers were born.

Anna attended Edison High School and in 1930 met her future husband Dan, when they both worked at a packing shed in Sanger. In 1936, they were wed at the Salem Congregational Church and the couple began a long and happy life together in Sanger and then in Fowler, where they owned and farmed a grape vineyard on Villa Avenue for nearly seventy years. It was a happy place and four children were born to the couple: Kenneth, Patricia, Sharon and Gary.

Anna and Dan belonged to the Salem Congregational Church and they were active in their support of the church. Anna belonged to the Tabitha Society that raised funds by hosting many dinners at Salem Church. Near the end of her life, Anna still asked visitors, "Won't you stay for supper?"

After Dan's stroke in 1995, Anna cared for him at their apartment in Twilight Haven Retirement Community in Fresno for ten years until his death in 2003. They had been married sixty-seven years. Her hard work and diligence in support of her husband were typical of her lifetime of service and caring for others.

She was an unforgettable person, a generous and loving spirit that never thought of herself or complained. She was funny, quick, strong, caring, the essence of goodness.

She is predeceased by her parents, Anna and Heinrich Schneider, her brother Henry and sister Louise, her husband Daniel and their infant daughter Patricia.

She is survived by her children Kenneth and his wife Kay; Sharon and her husband Sydney; and Gary and his wife Connie. Grandchildren are Kathryn (Karle) and her husband Brian Olson; Kendall Karle and his wife Kerry; Kurt Karle and his wife Laura; Kara Bowie and Emily (Bowie) Berg and her husband John; and Matthew and Leslie Karle. There are six great-grandchildren: Kyle Karle, Jeffrey and Jacob Berg, Benjamin, Kelsey, and Kayla Olson. In addition, she is survived by her brothers and sisters George Schneider and his wife Lydia; Don Schneider, and his wife Helen; Emma (Schneider) Bowen; and Esther (Schneider) and her husband Jerry Bach; as well as many nieces and nephews.
All are grateful for the life of this extraordinary woman.

Funeral services will be held at Stephens and Bean Chapel, on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at 1:00 p.m., with a reception following at Twilight Haven Memorial Hall, 1717 S. Winery Avenue, Fresno.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Twilight Haven or to Salem Evangelical Free Church in Sanger.
