Hannah was the 2nd of seven children born to Nathaniel and Roxanna (Austin) Brainard*. Her siblings: Elanor, Ichabod (dy), Nathaniel Chapman, Elizabeth (dy) Susan King and Isaac Church. Her mother died in 1808 and a half brother, George, born after that, died young.

On November 17, 1820, Hannah became the wife of Ephraim Leighton Jr at Mount Vernon, Maine where she was born. They had eight children: Laura Ann, Henry Martin, twins Rosanna Brainard and Rosilla Clough, Owen Oaks, Abigail Robinson, Esther C. and Sullivan Augustine.

In the 1850 census there is a 5-year-old male, George, living in the household but it's not known if he was a child or a grand child and he's not there in 1860.**.

The family lived in Parkman, Maine for some time where Ephraim farmed and where all their children were born but the 1850 census finds them in Augusta.

In 1860, the couple is in their mid-60s, in Augusta and still farming. Daughter Abigail is living with them as is a 10-year-old James Nason, son of their daughter Laura Ann.

Hannah died about two months before the 1870 census was taken. Her gravestone records that she was aged 75 years and 11 months upon her death. But if one uses the birth date [from the Leighton Genealogy, by Perley M Leighton] she was actually just shy of 77, at 76 years and 10 months.

She is buried in the Leighton family plot [see map for location], next to her husband, Ephraim Jr. Her 10-year-old son Sullivan who died in 1848 is buried there as well, along with two sisters-in-law and her father-in-law.

* Google "The Genealogy of the Brainerd-Brainard Family in America 1649-1908," Lucy Abigail Brainard, pub. 1908, Vol. 1, pp 48, 72-73 and 126, to read more.

** Further research shows that George could be a step-brother to Hannah. Her mother died in 1808 and her father remarried the next year. In the above mentioned source, there is a son, George listed but the source says he died young which usually means in childhood.

Despite the date on the headstone, the "Maine Farmer" reports Hannah's death at April 26, 1870. For now, that's going to be her date of death till it is proved wrong.
