Elmer S. Mercer Jr., 87, died on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at Hickory House Nursing Home in Honey Brook.

Elmer was born in West Chester, son of the late Elmer Sr. and Martha Johnson Mercer.

Elmer was a graduate of Downingtown High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and achieved the rank of staff sergeant. He served as a flight test engineer in the Southwest Pacific Campaign. He was a recipient of three Gold Battle Bars and received a Carbine Marksman Badge, a Good Conduct Medal, a Unit Citation Campaign and Service Victory Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars.

He was employed by the Borough of West Chester for many years as a crossing guard.

Elmer is survived by a son, Michael Mercer of South Carolina; a sister and brother-in-law, Bessie and Martin Brittingham of West Chester; and two granddaughters, Kristina Shey and Catherine Mercer.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Founds Funeral Home Inc., High and Union streets, West Chester, 610-696-0134.
Friends may call from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Green Mount Cemetery, Westtown Road, West Goshen.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
