Son of David and Pola Zareikin, of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. His brother Samuel also died on service.

He was rear gunner of Halifax bomber NP944 when it was sent on a mine-laying operation near the island of Heligoland in north-west Germany. Joe was killed instantly when their plane was attacked by a German Junkers Ju88 night fighter, although the other 6 crew mambers were able to return to England alive.
