James W. Hibbs was born March 21, 1923, on a farm in Jameson, Missouri, to Gathyl and Gwynth (Geist) Hibbs. He passed away at the Gove County medical Center Long Term Care Unit in Quinter, KS, on January 3, 2003, at the age of 79.
On May 17, 1947, he was united in marriage with Thelma White. She survives of the home.
Jim spent his early years on a farm and was no stranger to hard work. During World War II he served his nation in the U. S. Army as a member of the 84th Infantry Division, where he was awarded the Purple Heart.
Jim spent 30 years as a depot agent for the Union Pacific Railroad, serving at Quinter, Sharon Springs, Morland, Grainfield, Oakley and Hill City. Many people remember him for his sense of humor.
Jim was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, Studley. He was also a 50 year Mason, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star, both of Hill City.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Thelma; three children: Claude Hibbs, Donna Vincent, and Teresa Maley; eight grandchildren; a sister Betty Salmon; a brother Gathyl Hibbs Jr.; an aunt Crystal Patton; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Marjorie Huff; and an aunt, Ina Bea Jones.
Funeral services for James Hibbs were Monday, January 6, 2003, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Studley. Memorials may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home and may be made to Gove County Medical Center Long Term Care Unit, Quinter, KS.
