Funeral services will be held at Vernal First Ward Chapel Friday at 2 p.m. for Richard J. Slaugh, 64, pioneer sawmill operator and freighter, who passed away after a lingering illness Tuesday at 6 a.m. at his home. Speakers at the services will be Archie Johnson and Warren Richardson, according to Ernest M. Caldwell, first counselor in the bishopric, who has charge of the services.
Mr. Slaugh started as a youth of 12 to freight with teams and wagons between Vernal and Price, making the trip over the Nine-Mile Road. He used to relate many interesting experiences he had in his work. In 1915 he became interested in the sawmill business and until 1942 he operated mills at a site near the old Trout Creek Ranger Station and Oaks Park. In recent years he has devoted his time to building a comfortable home and a number of apartments. His health has constantly failed following an operation at Salt Lake last December.
He was born in Vernal in 1887, a son of John Jacob and Mary Alice Perry Slaugh. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He married Alberta Green in 1910 in Vernal.
He is survived by his widow and six sons and daughters, Ivan R. and Wayne Slaugh, Doris Mott and Mrs. Bernice Roberts, Vernal; Mervin J. Slaugh, Snyder, Texas and Lynn Slaugh, Provo; four brothers, Curtis Slaugh, Kemmerer, Wyoming; Kimball Slaugh, Window Rock, Arizona; Forrest Slaugh, Price and William Slaugh, Vernal; three sisters, Mrs. Leona McConkie, Vernal; Mrs. Pearl Walkup, Whiterocks and Mrs. Bessie Atwood, Kanbrook, Canada.
Burial will be in the Vernal cemetery, under the direction of the Vernal Mortuary.
