Peter was the son of Christopher Shuck and Mary Ann Livengood.

Peter's whereabouts after 1835 have been a mystery to all researchers. Attempts to conclusively find him in the 1850 or 1860 census have failed.

The next time he turned up was on 1 Jul 1861 when he enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. At that time he was living in Osceola, IA. He was assigned to Company F, 6th Infantry Regiment Iowa. Following his discharge from the army on 6 Feb 1862 after suffering debilitation from measles and rheumatism as a result, he went to Lucas County, IA, where his brother Samuel had a farm. It was there that Peter married and spent the rest of his life.

The 1870 census has Peter and his family living in Warren, Lucas, IA with his occupation given as farmer. They are in the same location for the 1880 census which comes up under Benton or Warren township and Peter's occupation is still farmer. All five children are in the household. The 1900 census has Peter and Flora in Union, Lucas, IA with Peter's occupation day labor and Elizabeth's nurse. They owned their own home free of mortgage. Elizabeth had given birth to five children, but said only three were still living (this causes some confusion as I have found all, but Millie still alive at this time).

Peter was a school teacher, and in later years was a janitor in the Derby school. He was also said to be a handler of horses.

Peter and Betty perhaps farmed for a while, but in 1892 they bought land in Derby and lived there.

From the Chariton Harold, 6-8-1899 Edition:
"P. P. Shuck had a horse step on his foot recently, which laid him up for several days."

In 1916, Betty insured the structures on their town lots for $265. The premium for five years was $2.06.

From the Chariton Patriot, 11-28-1912 Edition:
"Peter Shuck was born in Muskingum County, Ohio April 2d, 1827 and died at his home in Derby, Iowa, Tuesday, November 19th, 1912 at 3 p.m. aged eight-five years, seven months, seventeen days. When twenty-one years of age he came to Iowa where he was married to Miss Elizabeth F. Gilmore on September 8th, 1864. To this union were born five children, all of whom are living, excepting one. The living are Mrs. M. S. Conner and Mrs. F. H. DeSomber, of Derby, C. F. Shuck, of Idaho, and M. E. Shuck, of Rawlins, Wyo.

Early in the summer of 1861 Mr. Shuck enlisted in the Sixth Iowa Infantry for a period of three years, but on account of failing health he served only seven months.

He was a member of the M. E. church for more than forty years, and died in the faith. The funeral service was held in the M. E. church in Derby Thursday, November 21st at 2 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. E. L. Stone. Interment was made at Derby cemetery."
