Private, 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based in Shilo, Manitoba. He was deployed with the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team, part of the Canadian contingent of NATO forces serving in Afghanistan. Aged 21.

Pte Chidley was one of four Canadian soldiers and a journalist, Michelle Lang, killed by a massive roadside bomb explosion. Four other soldiers and another Canadian civilian official were injured in the incident about four kilometres south of Kandahar city. The three other fallen were Sgt George Miok, Sgt Kirk Taylor and Cpl Zachery McCormack.

Born in Cambridge, ON Pte Chidley grew up in Langley, BC and started flying lessons at age 14. He joined the military reserves after high school in 2006, moved to the regular force and was on his first overseas tour of duty. Lauded for his likeable demeanor and strong work ethic, he was described as a great driver and a soldier ready for difficult tasks. He could always beat his friends and fellow soldiers at video games. Close to his family, he was also excited at the prospect of becoming an uncle in the new year. His heartbroken father said Garrett was "proud and happy to go to Afghanistan. He worked hard to get there. He was proud of his buddies, proud of what he was up to".

Pte Chidley is survived by father Cameron Chidley, mother Sian (Brad) LeSueur, sister Devon (Brent) Parsons, brother Joseph, his fiancée Danielle Risch, step-sisters Emma and Sadie, extended family and friends along with his cats, Cranson and Gilbert Chidley.

Funeral service was held on January 12, 2010 at Victory Memorial Park Cemetery & Crematorium in Surrey, BC.

Canada has now lost 138 military personnel in Afghanistan since the mission started in 2002. Ms Lang is the fourth Canadian civilian, along with a diplomat and two aid workers, killed in the conflict.
