JOHN MARKWARDT

Called By Death.
John Markwardt, 84, one of Kiel's old-time residents, was called to his reward on Friday afternoon at 5 o'clock, after a brief illness with the infirmities of old age. A stroke was the immediate cause of death.
Deceased was born February 18, 1840, in Wismar, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, where he grew to manhood. One year after his marriage to Louise Jacobs, which took place October 26, 1865 he was called to the colors by the Kaiser, and also took part in the war 1870-71. He came to America with his family in 1872, settling in Kiel, where the couple has resided ever since. Besides his aged widow he is survived by three sons, Fred.
of Kohler, Otto, Sheboygan, and Edward of the town of New Holstein; two daughters, Mrs. Geo. Ryan of Milwaukee and Miss Meta at home. Also 23 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren survive him. Mr. Marquardt was blessed with good health up to a few days before his death. He was always active, but quiet and unassuming in manner, and enjoyed the respect of all who knew him. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, from the late home, Rev. Wm. Rech officiating. Burial was in the Kiel cemetery.
The following out-of-town people attended the funeral of John Markwardt here on Monday: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Markwardt, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Markwardt, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Brickner, Mr. and Mrs. A.
