Kate McDaniel Tharpe was the daughter of Jeremiah Jackson McDaniel and Nancy Rebecca Hargraves; mother of Benjamin T., Sheila Kate, and Gerald Frederick who left his mother's side at the early age of 4 yrs 11 mos and 18 days. Kate was born in Waresboro, Georgia and as a young girl moved to Defuniak Springs, Florida. She settled in Leon County, Florida in 1934.

She worked at Dale Mabry Field during World War II and later retired from the Motor Vehicle Commission. She was a wonderful seamstress who lovingly sewed for her family.

Kate McDaniel Tharpe, 1414 Stevenson Drive, died Saturday at Tallahassee Memorial after a long illness. She was 81.

She was a native of DeFuniak Springs and had lived in Tallahassee since 1934. She was a retired employee of the State Motor Vehicle Commission.

Survivors include a son, Ben T. Tharpe, Tallahassee; a daughter, Mrs. Worthie Kinsey, Tallahassee; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Culley & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
