BURLINGTON, VT. - 2nd LT. Richard "Dick" Bowler Jr. age 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 28th 2009 at the Birchwood Terrace Health Care in Burlington, Vt.

Dick was born on April 7th 1925 in Northampton, Mass., he was the son of Richard and Frances (Messenger) Bowler.

He attended High School in Marblehead Massachusetts.

He enlisted in the Army Air Force after High School and served until 1945.

He became a navigator at the rank of Staff Sergeant in a B-17 and a member of Hells Angels 303rd Bomber Group.

His plane was shot down over Germany, was captured and he became a POW for several months.

He was awarded the Purple Heart and Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster.

He was then commissioned to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

Dick then attended and graduated from Wentworth College in Massachusetts as a Professional Engineer.

On August 27th 1988, he married Catherine Savage in South Burlington, Vermont.

He was a member of ASHRE, AFA and the Burlington Elks Club #916.

Dick Owned and Operated North East Industries for many years.

He enjoyed wood working, family gatherings, and UVM Hockey.

After retirement, he enjoyed his work as a part time employee of Lake Shore Hardware in Colchester, Vt.

He was predeceased by his parents, and one sister; Muriel Croke of Wareham Mass.

Burial was at the Lake View Cemetery in Burlington, Vt.
