Thelma Martin taught English at Mishawaka High School, in Mishawaka, Indiana. She was head of the English Department. Her teaching career began in 1945 at Mishawaka's Battell Elementary School; from there, she moved to Main Junior High, and then to the high school in 1954.

Her bachelor's degree was from Butler University; her master's, from the University of Notre Dame.

She was born in southern Indiana, the daughter of a carpenter and his wife. In 1920, she was living with her parents in Batesville, Ripley County, Indiana. The young family lived at 306 Western Avenue. Her father was a cabinet maker at a factory.

Her brother, Robert, was born when Thelma was about five years old, and by 1930 the family had moved to Indianapolis where they lived at 1818 Sharon Avenue. In Indianapolis, her father worked as a carpenter.

She was an English major at Butler University, Class of 1938. She was a member of Phi Chi Nu, Spurs, and the Butler Independent Association.

Marriage was not an option for Thelma, but she had a life-long relationship with Lynetta Elizabeth Wilson (1909-1988; findagrave # 132765514 ), Dean of Girls at Mishawaka High School. They made their home at 3724 Terry Lane in Mishawaka, Indiana. Lynetta survived Thelma by 18 months.
