Frederick G. Lorenz Jr., 86, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at his residence in Nashville.

He was born April 18, 1914, in Indianapolis. His parents were Frederick G. and Bessie L. (Sherman) Lorenz Sr. He married Mary Jane Steeg on Feb. 17, 1940, in Indianapolis. She survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Alice Lorenz of Nashville and Helen Holdeman and Linda Norton, both of Franklin; a brother, Paul Lorenz of Nashville; two sisters, Virginia Farmer of Indianapolis and Marjorie Paddock of Elmhurst, Ill.; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

He was an industrial arts and science teacher for 25 years at The Orchard School in Indianapolis, retiring in 1972. In 1987 he was named a Distinguished Friend of the school.

He served for many years on the Brown County Zoning Appeals, Soil and Water Conservation and Agricultural Conservation service boards. He was a charter member of the Brown County Historical Society.

He was the founder of Gnaw Bone Camp in Brown County. He was a 50-year member of the American Camping Association, serving on the regional and national boards of the Indiana section. He was a Lifetime Certified Camp Director and Instructor of Outdoor Living Skills. He was named a Pioneer in Camping in 1989 and received the Heart and Soul Award of the Indiana section of the association in 1990. He was an honorary board member of Happy Hollow Children's Camp. He was appointed a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1989. He was a former member of Nashville Masonic Lodge and a member of Oriental Lodge of Indianapolis and Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite. He was active in Boy Scouts as an Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster and Cubmaster, receiving the Scoutmaster Key, Silver Beaver Award and 50-year pin.

The Rev. Charles Stanley will conduct a service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Peace Chapel of the Community Mausoleum in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Tuesday at the chapel. Entombment will be in the mausoleum. Arrangements are being handled by Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
