Indianapolis physicians Patrick H. Jameson and James H. Kitchen were among a group of 28 physicians who founded the Indiana State Medical Society (now, the Indiana State Medical Association) in 1849. When the Civil War began, Governor Oliver P. Morton appointed Drs. Jameson and Kitchen to be the camp doctors at all military camps in Indianapolis including the Camp Morton prisoner of war camp.
