Ernest Dewey "Arab" Farris of the Fort Gates community died at his home May 25. He was 75.
Services were held Friday at Scott's Funeral Home with the Rev. Rex Tilly officiating. Burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Farris was born September 16,1919 in the Silver City community of Coryell County, where he was reared and attended school. He was the son of the late Thomas and Martha Farris.
On February 8,1945, he married Miss Robbie Earlene Mensch and they made their home in Silver City before moving to the Fort Gates area in 1952.
Mr. Farris worked as a truck driver for many years for Chick Barnard and also as a truck driver for Bill Pollard. He later worked as a mechanic for Bob Tippit.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving under Gen. George Patton in the 2nd Armored Division (Hell on Wheels Battalion). During the war, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and three grandchildren.
Mr. Farris was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God in Gatesville.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Robbie Earlene Farris, and two daughters, Margaret A. Chance and Jo Marie January, all of the Fort Gates community; one son, Dewey Dwain Farris of Copperas Cove; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were R.L. Woodson, John Fowler, Robert Fowler, Lloyd Holden, Brandon Holden, and Gaylon Simmons.
Memorials may be given to the Temple Heart of Texas Hospice.
