+Suggested edit: Ill health brought Claude Vandeventer to Hall County in 1906 from Hunt County, and he settled in Memphis when the city boasted of three brick buildings and all the sidewalks were plank. Mr. Vandeventer secured a contract to haul gravel to the water works shortly after his arrival to Memphis. He got the contract from D. Browder. Later, Mr. Vandeventer moved to the farm of Mr. Snowden and made his home there for a time. It was his ambition to own a saddle horse and saddle. A friend suggested that he contact S.S. Montgomery at the First National Bank in Memphis and borrow the money. The bank was then located on the northeast corner of the courthouse square in the building occupied at Tarver's Drug Store. He made the loan and purchased the horse and saddle, both of which were a great source of pride and gave him long and good service. During the crop season of 1906, he lived in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.T. Rea and picked cotton on their place. Mr. Vandeventer has lived in the Plaska community all these years.
