Married James Shields, 24 Feb 1819, Barony, Glasgow, Scotland

History - Elizabeth' son, George Shields, paid passage for his father, James Shields, and his stepmother, Marion Campbell. James Shields was born on the 4th of September, 1795 in Govan, Lanark, Scotland and was baptized into the Church by Elder Robert Dock on the 3rd of October, 1857.

Elizabeth was James' first wife and mother of all his children. Elizabeth Livingston was born in 1794 in Glasgow, Scotland. James and Elizabeth were married in 1818 in Paisley, Scotland and they had a large family. She died in Johnston, Renfrew, Scotland in 1848.

James married his second wife, Marrian Campbell in Glasgow, Scotland on the 24th of June 1853, when he was 58 years old and they migrated to Utah in 1871. They lived in Utah with their son, George Shields until they passed on. James on the 17th of May, 1888 (93 years old), and Marrian on the 15th of September 1890.

James Shields, born in 1795, came to Utah in 1871 and made his and his wife's home on Grandmother Shield's farm in South Jordan. Many an evening when the weather was fair, the old man would take his bagpipes and set off for the riverbank. Pacing a distance of half a mile the stirring music of the bagpipes could be heard up and down the river valley for a long distance. In spite of the fact that the Canadian military brass refuse to accept the bagpipe as a musical instrument or the sounds produced as music, those hearing James and his Scotch tunes were cheered by the sound of pipes as the music floated on the evening air.

George and Jane Shields had fourteen children in all, but six of them died in early infancy and only eight remained to live out their lives. Those are according to placement by birth: James Shields who married Elizabeth Livingstone and Martha Soffe (polygamist), Elizabeth Shields who married Joseph Beckstead, William John Shields who married Elizabeth Husky, Margaret Jane who married James Abbott, Sarah Burnet who married William Soffe, David who married Sarah Beckstead, Bell who married Ensign Woodruff, and George Wallace who married Mary Stocking.

George Shields and his wife, Jane Cardy, lived in South Jordan many years where they were highly respected and they did a great deal in helping build the community. George died in Salt Lake City on the 19th of April 1908, and Jane died in Salt Lake City on the 21st of July 1911. They were both buried in South Jordan, Utah and a picture of this couple hangs in the building of the Daughters of the Pioneers on North Main Street in Salt Lake City, Utah.
