Obituary of the Oldest Man in Macon County
On Nov. 9, 1931 the death angel visited the home of James Sutton and took him home to live with his Savior. He was 98 years and 7 months old. He had been a Christian so long that his neighbors can not remember when he was added to the church. In 1857, he was married to Alethia Shoulders, to which union were born nine children, all of whom preceded him in death except three: Haley Sutton, with whom he lived; Mrs. John Climer of Difficult and Flavus Sutton of Mansfield, Texas. He had 31 grandchildren living, a number of great grand children. His first wife died about 48 years ago and he married Bettie Smith Thompson, who has (words left out here) last member of his family, his brother, the late D. C. Sutton of Difficult, been dead some 18 years. He was the ………… (words left out) having died several years ago.
I suppose Grandpa was the oldest man in Macon County, having been born in 1833. He had lived on the farm where he died 69 years. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. We can never go to see Grandpa any more in this world; but if we live faithful Christians as he did we can meet him in that land where we will never grow old.
