~~~The Brownsville Herald (Brownsville, TX) Thur, 25 Apr 1895
Rev John Lipscomb of Hidalgo County, arrived in town this morning with several wagons, twelve yoke of oxen, twelve yoke of horses, and a force of men to transport an irrigation pump, which came for Mr Lipscomb on this steamer. This pump, Mr Lipscomb informs "The Herald" is of sufficient capacity to irrigate 500 acres and is intended for use on the plantation of John Closer, a large portion of which is being cultivated by Mr Lipscomb. The machinery will be put in position once on reaching its destination, a system of ditches having already been made in preparation for its use. Mr Closer's enterprise in thus importing this irrigation machinery and drawing on the every ready Rio Grande for moisture for his crops should be emulated by all who have property along the river front.
Mr Lipscomb reports good rains in Hidalgo County, and says his corn, of which he has hundreds of acres, will soon begin to tassell.
