Frances Helen Kacer, 95, of Toledo, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Carrington Place of Toledo under the care of Hospice Compassus. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2013 from 4-7 PM at the Funeral Home in Tama with a Vigil Service and Rosary at 7 PM. Frances was born on April 26, 1917, in Odessa, Washington, the daughter of James and Anna (Kvidera) Nechanicky. At three years of age, the family returned to Tama County where she graduated 8th grade. After the death of her father, she lived with her aunts and uncles. She married Charles Edward Kacer on January 10, 1938, at St. Vaclav Church in rural Clutier, Iowa. They farmed in the Traer, Garwin, and Tama area. In 1954, they moved from the farm to Toledo, where she was employed by the Button Factory in Toledo Heights. She later was a cook at King Tower Café in Tama, Dick's Restaurant in Toledo, and Iowa State Juvenile Home where she retired in 1983. Frances was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama and CCW, KD Lodge in Clutier, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary. Frances enjoyed making wedding cakes, kolaches, cinnamon rolls, and poppy seed bismarks. She was a great seamstress, gardener, and enjoyed crocheting, and knitting. Survivors include her daughter, Maxine (Russell) Upah of Belle Plaine; a son-in-law, Bernard (Mary) Svoboda of Clutier; ten grandchildren, Brenda (Alan) Molyneux, Denise (Bart) Hamlett, Corinne (Barry) McGrew, Jeff (Debra) Upah, Brent (Cindy) Upah, Darrin (Jodi) Upah, Scott (Sheila) Svoboda, Stacey (Shane) Vogeler, Shawn (Jenny) Svoboda, and Shane Svoboda; twenty-six great-grandchildren; eighteen great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Elsie Gates of Aztec, NM; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Nekola of Tama; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Charles; daughter, Irene Svoboda; brother, Leonard Nechanicky; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Gates. A memorial fund has been established. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the Carrington Place staff for their loving care.
