At the time there were two strangers in the store. Later that afternoon his riderless horse returned home without its bridle. A search immediately ensued and his body was found on March 22, 1743 in the Neponset River. He had been tied with his horse's bridle, and all his money was missing. Sometime later, these two men were apprehended in New York for horse theivery. They confessed to the murder of Samuel Arnold and the theft of his money. They were hung in New York State.
