Served in Co. A, 37th Iowa Infantry. Stedman, Elihu H. Age 48. Residence Cedar Rapids, nativity Ohio. Appointed First Lieutenant Dec. 15, 1862. Mustered Dec. 15, 1862. Resigned May 22, 1863.Obituary of Elihu Higley Stedman published in "Meigs Co. Historian", Vol. 17, #3 (Sept. 1997)

"He worked on his father's farm until he was 19 years of age. He then left home and went to Chestre in the same county and learned a trade with James Ralston, serving an apprenticeship of 3 years. He was married in 1837 to Adaline Elliot of Chester, Ohio. The result of this union was five children, four of whom are now living. In 1843 he removed to Pomeroy where he engaged in merchandising for many years. In 1854 his wife died and he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In 1855 he was married to Sarah J. Powell in Cedar Rapids, by whom he had 3 children all of whom are living. In 1862 he enlisted as private in 37th Iowa inf. and was elected 1st Lt of Co A. In 1863 he was taken sick and soon discharged. He moved to Vinton in 1867. Mayor of Cedar Rapids before the war and JP in Cedar Rids and Vinton for 15 years. His father was Rev. Eli Stedman, first Free Baptist minister preached in state of Ohio. In 1838 deceased gave his heart to the Savior and with wife united with Baptist church. After moving to Pomeroy he and wife united with Presbyterian church., and with Presbyterian in Vinton (obit, Vinton Iowa Eagle).
