Perry Whitney came to Vernal to help his brothers build some bridges north of Vernal and then worked construction downtown. A friend introduced Perry to Thelma and the bashful, gentle Perry soon fell in love with her. A few months later they were married. Almost immediately Perry had to go into the armed services. Thelma went to to California to be near him, until he was sent to the Pacific. She moved to the Provo area, close to his folks, and worked at Safeways for awhile, then returned to Vernal.

Thelma rented a little home where she ane Philip and her mother lived until the end of the war. Winona stayed with them for a few months, Lyle lived with them for about a year and Naomi frequently spent weekends there. Thelma worked long hours at Ashtons, then came home and worked into the night cleaning and doing laundry. Remembering the lean years, she bought lots of groceries so her mother would always have plenty with which to cook. She bought the second pressure cooker ever sold in the Uintah Valley.

There wasn't much work in construction around Vernal when Perry returned home, so they moved to Mapleton where Perry worked with his older brother. He built a lovely home and they had a lot of ground von which big gardens were raised. They sold the home and moved to Orem, where they rented a small apartment while Perry built another home, easier to care for. After Earl Massey: was divorced, his daughter, Carol Jean, came and lived with them for several years.

Philip was in the service when Perry broke his leg. Thelma couldn't drive, felt helpless and missed her family; so they sold their home and moved to Vernal shortly after Cynthia died. They bought part of her lot from Jessie and Thelma and Perry lived In Cynthia's old log house while Perry built a new brick home next to it.

Perry loved fishing and enjoyed deer and elk hunting. Nothing could stop him from watching Lawrence Welk each week. He died of cancer in 1969.
