Esther Louise Thompson was born in Wilson, Weber County, Utah to William Thompson and Jane Adamson Wanlass Thompson. Her father emigrated from Liverpool England February 18, 1856 on the ship "Caravan" and the age of 16 and arrived in New York March 27, 1856. Esther's father met and married Annie Shefford who later died. Then he married Jane A. Wanlass who is Esther's mother. Esther's parents moved to Wilson, Utah about 1888. The lived on a eighty acre tract of sandy soil one half mile West and one fourth mile South of the present Wilson Ward Church House. Her father built a four room house. Christine,Margaret, George Washington Job, Grover Cleveland and Esther Louise were born in this house. There wasn't any irrigation water for the land, but father was determined to irrigate, and he hired some men to scrape out a large pond, ten feet below the water table. Then he installed wind mills around the pond in a circle and then pumped water into a circular trough which carried the water to a ditch. This way he thought he would be able to water the crops. This water system was not a success, so he traded the windmills for a steam engine to pump the water, but his method proved to be to expensive, so he abandon trying to irrigate this eighty acres, and rented it to cattle feeders. Esther's mother was trained in Scotland as a dairymaid. Her parents acquired a herd of milk cows, and plenty of willing hands, there were 13 of us eventually. He went into the milk business. The milk was placed in cans, put in a milk wagon, as the vehicle was called, and taken to Ogden, three miles away, where it was peddled from door to door. Esther learned to work hard on her parents farm. They raised hay, grain, beets, fruit, sheep, pigs, and chickens. They sold eggs and made butter in the old dasher churn and cheese which they also sold. Esther was the 13th child born to William and Jane. Esther met and married David Lester Mitchell September 27, 1922 in the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had three children.
