MRS H. L. BRIGHT, 80, DIES
WAS DAUGHTER OF PETER HILL, 1ST CARTHAGE MAYOR
Services for Widow of Former Circuit Judge Will Be Held Wednesday
Mrs. Eva Bright, 80, wife of Judge Henry Lewis Bright and a life-long resident of Carthage, died at 7:30 last night in Mercy Infirmary, Springfield. Mrs. Bright had been in failing health many years. The last eight years she had made her home with Mrs. Fred Ferguson 514 East Fourth street, and most of that time was bedfast. Last Friday Mrs. Bright was moved in a Knell ambulance to the Springfield infirmary, the former St. John's Hospital there.
She was the daughter of Peter Hill, Carthage's first mayor and Dantie C. Hess Hill. Her father was a native of Virginia and her mother was born in Michigan. The two were married in Jefferson City and later moved to Jasper County, making their home in Carthage.
The former Eva Virginia Hill and Henry Lewis Bright were married in November 1904.Judge Bright was a graduate of William Jewell College and of the University of Michigan Law School.He served as police judge here from 1900 to 1904 and was prosecuting attorney of Jasper county from 1905 to 1908. In the November election of 1908 he was elected judge of the circuit court and served one term in that office. Judge Bright died June 9. 1938
In her younger years, Mrs. Bright was a talented pianist. She also took an active part in women club's work here.
An uncle, Oliver G. Hess, a retired attorney, lived for many years on East Third Street here. Mrs. Hill's only sister, Rilla Carter Hill, who was born January 13, 1871, died when she was a young woman. Mrs. Bright has no immediate surviving relatives.
Funeral services were held at the Knell service home. Rev. R. Ray Stone, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiated.
