Charles "Chuck" Sherwood Wendt, 83, of rural Houstonia, died Wednesday March 15, 2006, at his home. He was born March 27, 1922, in Akron, Iowa, the son of Paul and Nellye Morten Wendt. On July 28, 1946 he was married to Cynthia Maxine Thornsberry of Brumley, Missouri, who preceded him in death in 1979. In 1980, he married Betty McMurry Higgins who survives of the home.

He was raised and educated in Akron and Vermillion, South Dakota. While a student of the University of South Dakota, his college education was interrupted when he enlisted and was called to active service in the army in June 1943. During basic training he received an appointment to the Infantry Officer Candidate School. He graduated and was commissioned on July 4, 1944. He trained with the 70th Infantry Division at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and was with the 70th when they left December 1, 1944 to go to France. He served as a forward observer for his mortar platoon. He was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation, the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, the European Theater Citation with stars for the Alseace-Loraine, Central Europe, and Rhineland campaigns. He was also awarded the France Medal of Liberation.

He returned to the States in July, 1945 and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1947. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

He worked for the Burroughs Corporation, and was transferred to Sedalia in 1949. After 20 years with Burroughs, he served another 20 years as district manager for the Vernon Company, After his retirement, he served a term as the Presiding Commissioner of Pettis County.

He was one of the organizers of the Sedalia Jaycees and was elected president in 1953. Other activities included: Elks Lodge, VFW, Rotary, Masonic Lodge 236, Sedalia Country Club, Whiteman Air Force Base Community Council, and a Red Cross Volunteer at Bothwell Hospital. He participated in Operation Santa Claus in December 2003 and played Santa Claus in a Beijing, China orphanage. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Sedalia.

He is also survived by his daughters Becky Wendt of Kansas City, Mo., Cynthia Wendt and her husband Steven Fehr of Leawood, Ks., stepchildren Ronald and Linda Higgins of Houstonia, Mo., Gary and Karen Boulware of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Roger and Diann Powell of Springfield, Mo., fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, and one brother Morton Wendt of Sedalia, Mo.

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Penny Wendt Berger on July 30, 2005.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 18, 2006 at First Christian Church with Rev. Russell Willoughby officiating. Pallbears will be Steve Fehr, Alexander Fehr, Thomas Fehr, Maxwell Goodwin, and Colby Higgins. Honorary Pallbearers will be Don Weller, Bob Mason, Paul Rialti, David Menefee, Robert Koffman, Ron Jennings, George Wimmer, Tom Keating, Jack Pasley and Bernard Stanfield. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, where the Family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Hawkins Cemetery, Brumley, Missouri.

Family suggests Memorial contributions to Penny's Art Fund of the Sedalia School District Foundation, American Heart Association, or the American Cancer Society in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel, Sedalia, Missouri.
