He was 19, and living in Homestead, Iowa County, Iowa, when he enlisted as Private in Co. E of the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Oct. 19, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Nov. 23, 1861.
Harrington was severely wounded in the left hand on Feb. 24, 1863, by an accidental pistol shot.
He was promoted to 6th Corporal on Dec. 5, 1864; to 5th Corp. on Dec. 24, 1864; to 4th Corp. on May 1, 1865; and finally to 2nd Corporal on June 11, 1865.
Harrington was discharged with the rest of his company on Aug. 8, 1865, at Atlanta.
In August 1876, he married Anna Lyons Hughes in Spruce Creek, Huntington Co., PA.
