The Lawton Morning Press Sat., 3 Oct 1987 - Funeral for retired Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 DePorter Burr, 77, Lawton, will be at 1 pm Tues. in Becker Funeral Home Chapel. He died Fri. in a local nursing home after a brief illness. Burial with military honors will be in Fort Sill Post Cem. He was born 11 Nov 1909 in Webbers Falls. He retired from the Army 30 Nov 1955, at Fort Sill after 24 yrs. service, including service in WW II and tours in Germany & Japan. After retiring from the Army he worked at the post office in Lawton & was a member of the American Postal Workers Union. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the WW II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) & the National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of the equestrian team in the Army & competed against Gen. George Patton in the 1930s. He was a member of the Lawton Rangers where he served as palomino horse judge. He was also a member of the Southwest Arabian Club & had raised several breeds of horses. He married Estelle Champion 24 Dec 1934 in Muskogee. She died in March 1987. Survivors: 2sisters: Bertha Virden & Sylvia Jacobs, both of Stratford, CA & bro: Benjamin F. Burr, Jr.,-Warner.
